Telomeres and Time: Here’s what you need to know about your biological clock

Telomeres have recently become a key area of attention in the media. Since the 2009 Nobel Prize was awarded research on telomeres, a concept that used to be relegated to discussion among scientists has become a lot more mainstream. More recently, entrepreneur, scientist and bestselling author Dr. Elaine Chin authored one of Canada’s Globe and Mail’s Top 10 Best Sellers –Lifelines – unlocking the secret of your telomeres for a longer, healthier life – where she describes how to use your telomeres to maximize peak health. Even NASA has recently studied the telomeres of one of its astronauts Scott Kelly to understand how he aged in space travel and how that time in space affected these incredible indicators of cellular health called telomeres....

Using your own cells to improve your skin and reduce the signs of aging

Regenerative medicine is transforming healthcare as we know it. Leveraging the power of the human cell, doctors around the world are currently working to develop treatments for many of the diseases associated with aging, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and macular degeneration. Scientists are also discovering new applications for the human cell to fight visible signs of ageing. Wrinkles and fine lines, loss of natural glow and elasticity, dryness, and thinning of the skin - these can all be addressed through regenerative cell-based treatments. In order to take advantage of these opportunities, cell samples can be extracted and preserved under carefully controlled conditions. Your own younger cells extracted today can be reintroduced into your skin now or in the future to...

Stem cell therapy: Conditions currently approved in Canada

As of 2021, Canada has approved a total of 3 cellular therapeutic products for use on patients. These include the use of stem cells for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), Adult B-cell Lymphoma, and Graft V Host disease. Most approved therapies use hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), found in bone marrow, blood, and the umbilical cord all contain HSCs. The future of stem cell treatments is dependent on Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (IPSC) technology. IPSC technology involves reprogramming skin or blood cells into a pluripotent state .

Regenerative Recovery: How your own cells can help treat sports injury

The human body has an extraordinary capacity for healing. With enough time and proper care, it can recover from all kinds of injuries. However, this process does not always work as quickly and as effectively as we would like. This is especially true for elite athletes whose lives revolve around being able to train and perform at the highest level, and even recreational athletes who would like to get back to their training regimen as soon as possible after an injury. While injuries cannot be entirely avoided, scientists are currently working on cell-based therapeutics that will forever change the way they are treated. With the help of regenerative medicine, athletes will no longer be forced to slow down or leave...

The role of regenerative medicine in fighting Alzheimer’s

Most of us have seen the devastating effects that Alzheimer’s can have on those who develop it. It is a disease that not only impacts the people who suffer from it but it takes a toll on their loved ones as well. While it is most common among the elderly, it can manifest in people in their thirties or forties. Considering its prevalence, it would not be an exaggeration to consider it a public health crisis. Scientists are leveraging the power of regenerative medicine to help find a cure for this condition or, even better, preventing it from occurring at all. Find out how you can benefit from these advances by banking your cells today. Alzheimer’s disease significantly reduces the...
